Who doesn’t love shelter dogs and kids? Well, it gets better, because these shelter dogs are combined with children through reading.
These shelter dogs in the program were picked because they were shy and very nervous of people, making it hard for them to get adopted.
By pairing them up with children who sit in front of their cages and read to them, these dogs were able to get used to humans without being forced to interact with them, and they became much more willing to approach the humans.
The children got to practice their reading skills, too, so it was a great experience for both animal and human. This is something that definitely needs to be done more often around the world so that we can all benefit from the process. Who’s in with me, and where do I sign up?
Kids read to shelter dogs not only to keep them company but also to make them more adoptable
“Reading to the dogs helps to bring comfort to and reduce the anxiety of shelter pets”
“When children tell stories to the dogs, it also helps them develop their own reading skills”
“Hearing a child reading can really calm those animals. It is incredible, the response we’ve seen in these dogs.”
